The very nature of using foundation dollars to engage in transformational social justice work is paradoxical, messy and problematic at best. In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., we seek to do foundation work differently. Owning the paradox that is foundation work, we turn “business as usual” on its head and look outside the traditional philanthropy box. We recognize and attempt to name and address injustices. We are implementing new tools, seeking out our blind spots, in partnership with our community. Our granting and investing practices reflect this understanding. We seek out organizations that are addressing root causes of injustices. Within this sector, we aim to deploy capital at the intersections, across borders—to organizations bridging silos and addressing multiple related issues.
